Here we go!
Ok, since I never give myself enough time to properly train for an event, I’m hoping that the 250 days to Lake Stevens 70.3 will be plenty of time! I’ve never done anything close to this distance yet so it will be a challenge to complete the 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and 13.1 mile run. My only goals for this event are: 1 - to motivate & challenge myself to something new, 2 - to stay injury free through training and the race, and 3 - to finish the race feeling healthy. If by chance I happen to finish in 6.5 hours or less than that’s just a bonus!
So far this summer I have raced the 36-mile bike leg of Ski-to-Sea relay with my Team Kussisy! It was a blast! I also ran the Race for the Cure 5K in which I finished 5th in my age group despite being forced to walk the first half mile or so due to the massive crowd of people. Next was my first ever half marathon — Seafair! I had suffered from a slight stress fracture in my right knee while training back in May so didn’t feel fully prepared, but beat my goal time with a total time of 1:55. I also completed the 5-Mile Lake Women’s Sprint Triathlon with my friends Julia and Gwen. This was my 2nd triathlon ever and was great! My swim went much smoother than last year and my run pace was really good for me with a 7:41 min/mile pace for the 5K following the swim and bike.
In Sept. I ran the Ryka Iron Girl 10K and beat my sub-50 min. goal time. Later that month I completed my first ever Olympic distance triathlon at Black Diamond. Boy, that’s a lot different than the sprints! I wanted to prove to myself that I could swim the 1.5K distance since I am a really horrible swimmer. I did it, so now I have the confidence to tackle a half ironman….. here we go!
For now, I am working on building a solid aerobic base and have forced myself to run much slower than normal in order to keep my heart rate down. Seems a lot of coaches out there subscribe to the Maffetone method of training so I’ll be slowing down and building my base for the next few months. Won’t be that exciting, but I plan to track my progress and results… Now I just need to find a place to swim…hmm….

Welcome to Sweat365 Moe! Congratulations on conquering the swim portion of the triathlon. That’s the one thing I struggle with. I’m excited to read about your training adventures

Ha! Thanks Lisa, but I wouldn’t exactly say I’ve “conquered” the swim! I’ve got a long ways to go, but let’s just say that I no longer have to do the backstroke to swim a mile.
Best of luck with your Boston Qualifying challenge!
