Swim Class
More drills for better open water technique. I think I liked the first 6 weeks of this class better than this one. I guess because it is more fun to refine your swimming technique to get faster and more efficient than it is to learn how to properly sight and draft, etc. Or maybe it’s because I feel a little silly lifting my head to sight when I’m in the pool! Too bad the lakes aren’t warm yet!

ARGH! Stupid Foot!
Was hoping to do another long slow 10-12 mile run on Saturday, but apparently my stupid right foot had other plans for the day. I’ve been dealing with a nagging foot injury off and on for months now, but I thought I finally got to the bottom of it and it was 90% healed. I’ve been doing lots of stretching and PT which has helped a lot so I thought I was on the home stretch to recovery until this run. I ran the exact same route that I did a week ago and in the exact same shoes, same stretching routine, everything….felt fantastic last week, but this week I was only able to do 5 miles before limping back 2 miles to get home. Talk about frustrating! Anyway, I took Sunday off because of it and have decided to find a good podiatrist who is also a runner and try to get in ASAP. Thanks Lisa for the recommendation! If anyone else knows a great podiatrist feel free to pass along their name.

Tempo Run & Swim Class
Had a good day today with a good tempo run and my first session of swim class focusing on open water techniques. I’m not sure if it was due to the torture I put myself through over the weekend (10 mi run + 56-mi bike) or what, but my run felt really really good. I wasn’t trying to run all that fast, but found myself maintaining about a 7:30 pace which is pretty fast for me! I wonder just how long I could sustain that pace? The 4.1 miles today was not bad at all! Hmm….wonder if I could extend that out to a half marathon?
Swim class was good. Not a ton of swimming, but drills to practice open water techniques like sighting, drafting, and what to do if something goes wrong (goggles kicked off, etc). All good things to learn!

Lake Stevens Bike Course
I was able to take most of the day off from work today and it was a bit sunny (or at least not rainy!), so I decided to head up to Lake Stevens and test out the Half-Ironman bike course with my tri bike. Boy oh boy….was that a tough ride! The hills were relentless! Seemed like 2 really fast downhill portions (hit 43mph) but the rest is up, up, and more up, followed by steep up! yikes! I have a lot of work to do on the bike between now and July 6th. Lots and lots of hill work is in my future! I’m hoping that my legs weren’t fully recovered from my long run the day before and maybe that played a small part of making this ride seem extra difficult?
Well, at least I can tell myself that to feel better!
I’m also considering riding that race with my road bike instead of my tri bike. Anyone have any thoughts on that? I feel like I can climb better on my road bike, and since there really isn’t much
for flat sections I don’t see a lot of opportunity to take advantage of being in the aero position. (I also get a little nervous being so far away from my brakes in aero when I’m flying down a hill at 40+mph). Although I do love how my legs don’t feel like lead weights when I transition from bike to run with the tri bike. It’s much easier than with the road bike. Hmm….something to experiment with I guess? Next time I’ll try the course with my road bike and see how it compares.
All in all I had a great couple of days with a long run and a long bike ride! I’m hoping to have enough time to get those in once every week, but life just gets too darn busy sometimes!

Long Green Lake Run
Managed to get in a nice long run on Friday! It was my first longish (over 7 miles) run in a long time. My foot seemed to hold up ok…just random pain every once in a while that seemed to come and go throughout the run. Overall though, it’s getting better and I think I’ll be all right for the Vancouver Half Marathon coming up in 6 weeks. (fingers crossed!)

Burke Gilman & Sammamish River Trail Ride
Had a great ride on the trails today! It was the first time this year that I got my tri-bike out for a real ride so that felt great. I had been riding my road bike a few times outside because it is a bit more traffic-friendly, but have been mainly sticking to the tri bike on the trainer which tends to get b-o-r-i-n-g! The trails are perfect for not having to worry about traffic and getting an opportunity to ride in the aero position which is really tough to do (and not very safe) on roads with traffic. There was quite a headwind on the way out as I was struggling to stay over 17-18 mph. On the way back it was great! Was able to hold 19-20+ mph fairly easily! I also dropped my chain twice in the beginning….must make some adjustments to my front dérailleur.

101-year old Marathon Runner!
Wow! That about sums it all up. I caught this article yesterday and thought I’d share it in case anyone needs a little dose of inspiration. 101-year old Buster Martin is training for the London Marathon in April. If he completes it, he will break the record for the oldest person to complete a marathon — shattering it by 8 years! He just finished a half marathon in 5 hrs 13 min. I love that he says if he finishes the full marathon, he’ll celebrate with a pint and a cigarette!
I guess the message here is “keep moving” throughout life and remember that age is simply a state of mind! Best of luck to you Buster!

Run - 0.8 hours - 03/08/2008
Ok, so I’ve decided that it is really boring to just post my workouts when I don’t have time to write anything else. So from here on out I won’t be posting each and every workout, but will include one here and there as long as I have something else to say! All the workouts will still be logged, just not public. Hopefully this will encourage me to actually “write” more interesting stuff!
Had a good run outside today. I’ve been crazy slammed busy with work so have had a really tough time this last week or so getting in the workouts. I keep having to remind myself that I am doing this half ironman for FUN, and to not get stressed out if life gets in the way of training. It’s ok!

Morning Swim
Had a great swim session this morning. I think this class is really paying off because my stroke is starting to feel much more fluid and efficient. I haven’t tried to really sprint or anything yet and I still have to really focus on making sure I do everything right, but things seem to be starting to “click”!

Swim Class
More drills and practice on technique. I need to remind myself to keep my stroke wide enough and not cross over into the middle of my body! Other than that I was told I have really good rotation and great high elbows. :) I also am working on not bending my knees as much on my wimpy little kick and keeping my head down all the time. Lots to think about, but this class seems to be helping. It is really nice to have someone giving you feedback because swimming is so technical. Now let’s hope I’m actually getting faster too! But then again I figure I can’t possibly get much worse, so it’s all good!
