Almost Pain-Free 8-Miler!

Did an 8-mile run today which will be my last run of this distance or more until the Vancouver Half Marathon next weekend.  My foot injury seemed to hold up mostly ok today which gives me hope!  I’m going to take it relatively easy this week with running in hopes that it will be A-OK next Sunday.  I’m definitely not prepared for this race like I want to be due to this nagging injury, but I’m going to take it on anyway.  I have forgotten about my original goal of running a 1:45 or under, and have since revised it to just finishing healthy and not doing anymore damage to my foot.  I have promised myself that I will not be too proud to pull out of the race if I am in pain…I know that would be a tough decision as I am pretty stubborn and have a tendency to run through the pain.  The last thing I want though is to do more damage which would cause me to miss my first ever Half Ironman in less than 10 weeks.

Lake Stevens Ride

Headed up to Lake Stevens again today to ride the course for my upcoming half ironman.  For me the course is brutal due to the never-ending hills!  There are a couple that are really painful for me so I need to practice practice practice!  Each time it seems a little better than the last!

The bugs seemed to be out in full force today!  I had at least 10 fly right into my mouth!  Think I managed to only swallow about 3-4 of them though!  Yum….extra protein!  :)  I also had a bee get stuck in the vent of my helmet.  I immediately stopped and flung off the helmet, shook out my hair and released him before I got stung!  That was a close one!

It was a good ride which definitely challenges both my physical and mental toughness.  It is brutal to be out there alone and know that you are going to do the loop 2 times….the exact same hills that make you curse the first time through all have to be repeated!  It’s very good for my mental training I guess!

Also a note for next time…stop at the gas station after the first loop to get more fluids.  I went completely through 3 water bottles and still had 2 brutal climbs and 15 miles to go.  I was definitely dry-mouthed and thirsty by the time I was done….it also makes it hard to spit out the bugs when you don’t have any spit in your mouth!  :)

No Energy Run!

Ugh…after a forced 4-day break from training, running today was super tough!  I wasn’t able to workout for the last4 days due to working 12 hr days lately.  It’s amazing to me what a little stress, lack of exercise, and not eating quite right can do to your energy levels and overall well-being.  I felt like crap the last few days and it really showed in my running today!  My body felt very heavy and super low on energy….it was really tough to do the same run that was a piece of cake 2 weeks ago.  I couldn’t maintain my usual pace either and even small hills felt like mountains.  ugh!  No more of that!  Must find more balance on my busy work days and make more time for myself to eat right and exercise.

Burke Gilman Trail Ride

Great ride today! Too bad the triathlons I’m doing can’t all be as flat as the trails around here! :) Must do more work on those stinkin’ hills later this week!

Easy Run

Just a short easy run. My body is feeling tired and my foot wasn’t as happy as I would like it to be on this run so I kept it short and slow.

Swim - 0.8 hours - 04/15/2008

Warmed up with a 400, then did 200 yds of drills - 1-arm stroke,  & swim on side.
Then at a moderate pace: 400, 300, 200, 100, trying to increase the pace for each one.

Swim Class

Had another open water technique swim class tonight.  We warmed up with a 200 and then removed all of the lane lines again so we could swim together and have to deal with sighting, drafting, and of course a little combat every now and then!  We did some more sighting drills and a couple technique drills and then 10 of us did an 800 for time.  We swam 4 lengths x10 crossing the pool from right to left at the same time during those 4 lengths to force us to sight so we wouldn’t run into anyone.  It was a little chaotic at times (especially trying to pass someone) and when we were done on the left side of the pool we had to go immediately back over to the far right side before starting our next set of 4 lengths (10 times total since it is a 20yd pool).  So considering all of this “extra” stuff in there, I’m fairly happy with my time of 16:32!  Plus I didn’t feel like I was pushing it all that hard, so that is good!  :)

Soggy Run

Managed to do 9 miles today without my foot screaming at me to stop.  :)  It wasn’t a completely pain-free run, but was definitely better than the last time.  There is still hope that I can do the Vancouver Half Marathon in 19 days!  I’ve got my fingers and toes crossed!

The run was good, but it was starting to drizzle as I headed out.  No biggee I thought….it IS Seattle afterall and I should be able to run in a little rain.  Well, that little rain turned into a lot of rain and my last 5-6 miles I was completely soaked and was trying to avoid the big puddles (not that it would matter cause my shoes were already soaked through!).  I just kept telling myself….well, this is good practice for that next rainy day race!

Sunny Day Bike Ride

Even though my riding partner had to cancel due to sickness (feel better Amy), I still managed to have a great ride on a sunny Seattle Friday! It was a warm - 62 degrees so for the first time this year I didn’t have to bundle up for a bike ride. I went down to Renton and rode on part of the Cedar River Trail and then headed off into May Valley and back over to Lake Washington. It was a good loop with a few moderate hills but nothing super strenuous.

Then, as an added bonus I decided to add on a bit of a brick workout so I threw on the running shoes and away I went. I was feeling pretty good after the ride, but my legs were definitely feeling like lead weights. I looked at my watch though and couldn’t believe my pace! I was running around 7:30 min/mile pace and it was fairly easy! I think my legs just kept wanting to go the same cadence as I was on the bike….they just kept going and going and didn’t want to slow down at all. Wow! I managed to do 3 miles before I realized it was getting late and I needed to go or else I’d be stuck in a traffic nightmare getting home. All in all a very good day and I was on a super endorphine high on my drive home! Can’t wait to do it again! :)
